What is the NYC tenant law for 2024? This is a question potential renters/tenants in NYC may have and with good reason. But it’s more important for these potential or even existing tenants to understand that while new laws related to tenants and landlords might be introduced in any given year, they should be familiar with the general tenant law or more accurately, tenant rights and responsibilities.

A New Tenant Law in 2024

One new tenant law that became part of the standard tenant rights and responsibilities and was introduced in 2024 is “Good cause eviction.” The law dictates that most tenants cannot evict their tenants without a good cause. There are many examples of good causes stated on the official city page. However, it also covers exceptions like non-payment of rent, especially if the tenant can claim in the housing court that the rent increase was unreasonable. This law offers added protection to tenants. It doesn’t apply to all landlords, especially those with less than ten properties.

NYC Tenant Law

This is just one of the many laws that protect tenants in NYC, including tenant protection laws that went into effect in 2019. There are two different sets of laws—one for tenants in rent-stabilized apartments and another for tenants in market-rate apartments.

It’s worth noting that while a New York City broker cannot help you with tenant laws, they can still be useful in this domain. They can help you find rent-stabilized apartments (that are very rarely on the market) and may even guide you towards good/well-reputed landlords and away from strict or abusive landlords.
